George T. Stagg a big whiskey

George T. Stagg

de Vere’s Pub carries amazing Bourbons and this happens to be one of our favorites!  Part of the annually updated Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, ‘George T Stagg’ takes its name from the one-time owner of what is now Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. During the early 1880s the distillery was in the hands of Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr, who obtained a loan from his friend George T Stagg during difficult economic times. Stagg subsequently foreclosed on Taylor, taking over his company in the process! Distilled in the spring of 1993, the nose of this imposing, high-strength 15-year-old whiskey presents caramel, vanilla, sweet oak and glance cherries. Full-bodied, with plump corn, butterscotch, spicy oak and pipe tobacco on the palate. The long finish featuring oak, toffee, ginger and cherries. 70.3% ABV

You can try this Whiskey at  de Vere’s Pub in downtown Sacramento.

Maker's Mark

"Maker's Mark, Kentucky Straight Bourbon (USA)
Maker’s Mark is produced at Loretto in Kentucky, where distilling has been taking place on the Star Hill Farm site since to 1805. The present brand was developed by Bill Samuels Snr, who bought Star Hill in 1953, and the Scottish spelling of ‘whisky’ has been employed since the outset in recognition of Samuels’ Scottish ancestry. Since 2005 maker’s Mark has been owned by Fortune Brands, who are also responsible for Jim Beam. Samuels chose to create a Bourbon using a proportion of red winter wheat instead of the more common rye, in order to reduce the ‘burn’ left by many Bourbons of the time. The result is a comparatively soft and gentle spirit, which becomes very mellow as it matures. A subtle, complex, clean nose, with vanilla and spice, a delicate floral note of roses, plus lime and cocoa beans. Medium in body, Maker’s Mark offers a palate of fresh fruit, spices, eucalyptus and ginger cake. The finish features more spices, fresh oak with a hint of smoke, and a final flash of peach cheesecake. A delicate and circumspect Bourbon compared to some of its more redneck cousins. Very drinkable. 45.0% ABV, 70cl, £21.00, specialist whisky merchants. "

Tasting Notes From:

Whisky Magazine

Jim Murray

"Nose
Aroma with delightful strands of exotic fruit and honey. Fruit cake. Oak adds to feeling of class.
Palate
Lush, pleasingly deep and malty. A firm nuttiness adds extra oily, chewability to the toffee.
Finish
Drier than of old. Caramel toffee with the oak guarantees a bittersweet edge.
Comment
An old faithful of a bourbon. Never lets you down and being from the wheaty school always shows good oak balance. Nose is to die for."

Michael Jackson

"Nose
Wheaty, nutty. Bananas?
Palate
Buttered toast. Molasses. Maple syrup.
Finish
Clean, dryish, flapjack.
Comment
Beautifully structured. Tightly combined flavours. Every bit as smooth as it claims to be."

A Special Whiskey Night At de Vere's Irish Pub

Whiskey Society Members,
Please join us for two guest speakers next Tuesday March 30th at 7pm. We will be tasting hand crafted Bourbons under the instruction of two Masters of Bourbons, Hunter Chavanne and Drew Kulsveen.
Short Bio:
In 2005 Hunter Chavanne and his wife, Britt Kulsveen Chavanne, moved to Kentucky to work in the family business. It was Drew and Britt’s Grandfather, Thompson Willett, who founded the company in 1936, shortly after Prohibition. Britt’s father, Even Kulsveen, has been the proprietor since 1984. Britt is a jack-of-all-trades, as she is involved in several aspects of the family business --from glass procurements to tax payments to warehouse logistics to distillery renovations to… you get the idea. Hunter is in charge of marketing and travels frequently, spreading the gospel of the unique, handcrafted Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Rye Whiskies from Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, Ltd. Drew has been with the company since 2004 and is involved in production, barrel selection, and processing for bottling operations. Drew, Hunter and Britt take great pride in carrying on the family tradition, as well as being part of a company that has several award-winning bourbon and rye whiskies to its credit.

Bourbons of the Night will be :
Vintage 17 year, Pure Kentucky XO, and the Johnny Drum Private stock

Please Join us in our back Whiskey Bar this Tuesday so we can all learn more about America’s Finest Bourbons!

Booker's

TypeKentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Alcohol content125.6 Proof

Availability US: Available Japan: Available Duty Free: Unknown Europe: Available

History
In 1988, Booker Noe introduced his own signature bourbon, Booker's True Barrel Bourbon. Inspired by a 200-year-old tradition, Booker's is the only bourbon bottled straight-from-the-barrel, uncut and unfiltered. First created as a holiday gift for his special friends, Booker's whiskey was so well-received that he decided to make it available to bourbon lovers worldwide; much to the joy of spirit connoisseurs everywhere. Booker's is the rarest, absolute best bourbon available.

Distinctions
Booker's Bourbon is the only uncut, unfiltered, straight-from-the-barrel, connoisseur's sipping bourbon available today. It's bottled at its natural proof of between 121 and 127, and aged between six and eight years. Booker Noe, Jim Beam's grandson and master distiller emeritus, hand selects each barrel that will become Booker's Bourbon. Each barrel that will become Booker's bourbon is aged in the very center of the rackhouse where the temperature and humidity combines in the perfect proportion for the finest bourbon. This is truly the absolute best bourbon available.

Leopold's Peach

Bandit Review:
I am not one to usually associate fruit with my whiskey; however, I can be wrong.  One might stop and ask, "How do they cram so much peach flavor into this bottle and still have room for whiskey" after drinking from this bottle.  This is a great whiskey for after dinner, to pour over Ice cream, to glaze a peach cobbler, or just to sip and enjoy.  You will still taste whiskey while you also enjoy ripe round fruit flavors of peach, apricot, a slight hint of fig, finished with a whisper of spice brought over the top from the whiskey it's self.  I have tasted the Leopold's products and I have been impressed every time.

Tastings.com Review:

"Deep burnished copper color. Mashed baked peach, custard cream, and talc aromas. A thick syrupy entry leads to a tangy, viscous medium-full body of baked peach puree, prunes, and light peppery spice. Finishes with a tangy peach and apricot tart flavors with lime and mineral accents. Great pure, natural flavor-try with Asti Spumanti or prosecco for a killer Bellini cocktail."

How Bourbon Is Made a Little History.

Pappy Van Winkle 20yr VS. Pappy Van Winkle 23yr

Bandit Review:
It is not often that I am left speechless....enough said!

"LIMITED EDITION

This is the only 23 year old Kentucky Bourbon sold in the country today. There are only 3,000 bottles of this very rare 23 year old bourbon. It takes generations of distilling know-how to produce a rare, well-aged bourbon like this. Only the most careful and expensive distilling method can be used to create a whiskey as special as this one.

These barrels were carefully placed in the heart of the warehouse to receive the most benefit from the variable Kentucky seasons. Each season, the whiskey passes through the thin, caramel layer of the charred white oak barrels, picking up an enormous amount of color and flavor.

This fine old whiskey should be enjoyed neat or over ice. "Pappy" used to say, "why ship water all over the country." In keeping with his theory and practice, Julian Van Winkle has chosen to offer this whiskey at a higher than usual 95.6 proof. This higher proof allows all the incredible flavors to come out with each tasting. This truly is an older and wiser "Pappy.""

Bandit Review:

I recommend drinking this Pappy before the 23 year so you will be able to enjoy this one for all it has to offer. This Pappy although sophisticated is very light on the palate and rich with the Carmel goodness of any great bourbon. There is an earthy corn character to this one that can catch one off guard. A pleasure to drink and not completely overshadowed by his big brother the 23 year old. Cognac not needed for an enjoyable cigar after a great meal, Pappy is all you will need!
"This is the #1 Rated Bourbon Whiskey in the World
Rated 99 out of 100 by the World's Spirits Championships

The 'Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve' is aged an unheard of 20 years, and bottled at 90.4 proof. This whiskey is wonderfully smooth and rich. No other bourbon today can stand 20 years of aging, but this bourbon does it with style. 'Pappy Van Winkle' was a true character. This bourbon, like 'Pappy', is full of the character that makes it a very special whiskey. It, too, has been put in a class of a fine after dinner cognac. "

Good Old Pappy. Bandits Whiskey of The Week!

BANDIT'S BOURBON OF THE WEEK

  Pappy Van Winkel 15yr
This Bourbon is amazing! It has a small forgiving burn to it, but that comes from it being 107 proof. The burn makes your lips tingle as it travels down to warm your chest from the inside out. As you breath after the first sip, the small tingle starts to cool and you taste all that this amazing Bourbon has to offer, Carmel, vanilla, toffee and nothing but oak barrel. This bourbon is made with wheat in the corn mash which helps to add to it's over all smooth drinking (not to mention it is aged 15yrs!). From a novice bourbon drinker to an expert, everyone will know why you suggested this bourbon to them. Pappy Van Winkle can turn any Scotch or Irish Whiskey drinker into a believer of Bourbon!   The price per shot isn't bad as well, you really do get a great product for the dollar amount.  We sell if for about $13 a shot.  Come down to the pub, bring a cigar, and grab one of these bad boys! This is Bandit approved for sure. See you at the bar!
