The Revolver: By Bourbon and Branch

The Revolver

Around 2003, bartenders began switching their attention from the white spirits of the Cosmopolitan and the Mojito to brown spirits like bourbon and rye. Jonathan Santer created this drink at Bruno's, but the cocktail and dark-spirit renaissance truly caught fire in 2006 when pseudo-speakeasy Bourbon & Branch opened with the Revolver on the menu. It's been a fixture there ever since. The cocktail is a simple Manhattan variation, with coffee liqueur supplanting sweet vermouth.

2 ounces bourbon
½ ounce Tia Maria coffee liqueur
1 dash Fee Brothers orange bitters
1 dash Regan's orange bitters
Ice
Orange peel, for garnish

In a mixing glass, combine the bourbon, coffee liqueur and both bitters and fill with ice. Stir until well chilled and strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass. Flame an orange peel above the glass, toss the peel into the drink and serve.
